Durst/Vornado is committed to making the West Side
Rail Yard a model for the 21st century urban design and construction.
Inspired by Plan NYC 2030, the project will peruse LEED Gold certification
for each building as well as LEED certification for neighborhood
development.
The building systems will be designated to the highest levels of
environmental performance – conserving energy, maintaining
optimal air quality reducing water consumption and green roofs.
A central cogeneration plant will significantly reduce carbon emissions
and the demand on the city’s stressed electrical infrastructure.
These principles will extend to the landscape around the buildings,
which we view as a “living machine.” The open space
plan will reduce heat island effect and storm water run off and
increase natural habitat by using native planting, micro-irrigation
and significant tree plantings to create natural shade. By integrating
the environment into our design, our goal is to create a development
that positively impacts its visitors and residents.
