Anchoring the southern edge of the Eastern Rail Yards will be a large, multi-purpose Kunsthalle – a cultural center for temporary exhibitions. This cultural building will act as a flexible and creative “Pavilion in the Park” to host events ranging from community celebrations, to art shows, to runway events.

The Western Rail Yards includes 125,000 square feet reserved for a public intermediate school at the southeast corner – a location designed to maximize access to southern light. The multi-story school will have entrances both below and at the level of the High Line and will have classrooms that ring a private outdoor play space perched on a roof above the platform.

In addition, low-cost space will be reserved for community organizations. Beginning during the planning stages of the project, the Durst/Vornado team will work with the community to pinpoint potential uses and occupants and to solicit design ideas to maximize the flexibility and function of this space.
